Refreshing a Timeless Canadian Home
Every now and then, we’re invited to reimagine a home that’s already beautiful. One with strong bones, thoughtful architecture, and a history worth preserving. Our role isn’t to reinvent, but to refresh: enhancing what works, refining what doesn’t, and setting a new backdrop for the next chapter of the home’s story.
Understanding the Story
This project began with a gracious, timeless couple whose presence is reflected in every inch of their space. Like many homeowners, they felt something was slightly off, but couldn’t quite articulate it. Their tastes had evolved, and they wanted their home to evolve with them: lighter, more current, more refined, yet still full of warmth and history.
From the moment we stepped inside, we could sense the narrative embedded in the walls. This was a home full of love, memory, and care—each previous change made with deep intention. Our task was not to erase that history but to build upon it thoughtfully.
Crafting the Perfect Colour Palette
The heart of the project became one of the trickiest design challenges: colour. Bathed in golden prairie light that shifts throughout the day and year, the home’s hues change hourly. What looked perfect at 10 a.m. could feel off by sunset.
We weren’t just choosing paint, we were composing a palette that would live and breathe with the home. It needed to feel timeless in January and elegant in July. Achieving that required patience: a full year of testing swatches, observing tones across seasons, adjusting sheen levels, studying undertones, and fine-tuning saturation until the perfect colour story emerged.
Does it always take this long to choose paint?
The short answer is no. But for homes layered with nuance and legacy, this level of care is absolutely worth the wait.
Designing with Light
There were two key reasons for this intentional process. First, the light. We studied the way sunlight travels through the space, how it touches trim, surfaces, and details. This intentional approach made light an active collaborator. We explored how it shaped shadows, emphasized textures, and brought movement to stillness.
Refining the Heart of the Home
Every home has a centre of gravity, and in this residence, that place is the kitchen. We began by refining its surfaces. The cabinetry, once heavy, was refreshed with brand-new doors and a perfectly balanced creamy paint. This custom tone was chosen to feel soft in the morning light and elegant by evening; warm in the cold winter sun, yet bright during the warm golden hours. Leathered Taj Mahal quartzite brought a new sense of luxury to the island, its subtle veining catching the light in the perfect way. The backsplash tied everything together, the handmade tiles creating continuity without competing for attention.
The result is a kitchen that feels renewed but not replaced. One that still speaks the same design language as the rest of the home, only now in a more confident, timeless tone. It’s proof that thoughtful restraint can often be more transformative than a full overhaul.
Honouring the Soul of the Home
Second, the soul of the home: collected pieces from world travels, heirlooms passed through generations, and materials rich with memory. The new palette had to honour all of it, bridging past and present seamlessly, without disruption.
Every brushstroke, every tone, and every choice was made to create a home that tells a story. One that is lived in, loved, and experienced—not rushed.
A Timeless Transformation
The final result is a home where every detail reflects its journey beautifully. The spaces feel refreshed yet familiar, vibrant yet calm, a testament to the power of thoughtful design.
