I’m Ijmal Haider, Founder and Creative Director of Haider Design Group, a Calgary-based interior design studio creating timeless, highly personalized spaces for both residential and commercial clients. I believe the best designs are built to last — not just in style, but in the way they function for the people who live and work in them.

Haider Design Group was born from my early work on The Psychology of Design, where I explored how architecture, sociology, and human behaviour shape our everyday lives. Nearly two decades later, our award-winning team brings that same philosophy to every project — from custom home builds and full-scale renovations to luxury condos and commercial spaces. We approach each design with curiosity and collaboration, asking not just how a space will look, but how it will live. Will it make mornings smoother? Will it welcome friends with ease? Will it quietly stand the test of time?

    Ijmal Haider

    Ijmal Haider is the Owner and Creative Director of Haider Design Group, where construction know-how meets an artful eye. His fascination with building and design began over two decades ago, during the construction of his family home. At just 13, he’d sneak away to the site to chat with trades, absorbing every detail of the process.

    While studying Urban Sociology—paired with courses in Architectural History—Ijmal honed a deep understanding of not just structures, but the people who live within them. His focus on the history of furniture, architecture, and art shaped an approach that blends cultural context with timeless design.

    Professional experience in marketing, sales, and project management for a custom home builder, followed by his role as Sales and Marketing Manager for a high-rise condo developer, gave him a 360-degree view of the design-build industry. After working alongside some of Calgary’s leading designers, Ijmal founded Haider Design Group in 2018 to offer a truly bespoke construction and design experience—one that’s as much about the client’s story as it is about the space itself.

    Joel Matthew Warkentin

    Joel Matthew Warkentin is an artist, marketing mind, and all-around creative problem solver. With a background in sculpture and photography — plus an established history in marketing, design, and content creation — Joel brings a rare mix of precision and imagination to every project. He grew up learning the ins and outs of the woodshop and is a skilled woodworker, a craft he draws on in both his artistic practice and his work at HDG. His art has been exhibited across Canada and internationally, including Rome, Italy, earning him multiple awards along the way.

    At Haider Design Group, Joel is our resident marketing expert, art consultant, and office manager — the steady hub that keeps our online presence sharp and our ideas moving. In his interior design work, Joel focuses on how clients truly move through and interact with their space, ensuring that life after we leave is as seamless and inspiring as the reveal day. His fine art background shapes every decision, creating spaces that work beautifully in-the-round — lived in from every angle, experienced in every detail. And yes, Joel can build just about anything… and find a solution for everything.
